The Dow dropped 300 points after Trump tariff threats
From CNN Business' Matt Egan
The Dow declined 300 points, or 1.2%, on Friday morning after President Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on Mexico. The S&P 500 fell 1.2% and the Nasdaq lost 1.3%
Trump’s tariff threat against one of America’s largest trading partners amplified investor worries about how trade tensions will disrupt business and slow global economic growth.
Auto makers, which rely on Mexico as a vital part of their supply chain, retreated. Fiat Chrysler lost 5%, while General Motors and Ford lost 3% apiece.
The news also rocked the Mexican peso, which tumbled 3.4% against the US dollar.
The rising trade tensions spilled over into the energy market, driving US oil prices 2.8% lower to $54.93 a barrel.

The costs of any tariff imposed on Mexico will ultimately be passed along to American consumers. (Remember: Tariffs are paid by importers, not by exporting countries.)
So what does that mean? Tariffs will affect the supply chain for ...
- The US auto industry
- Machinery
- Medical instruments
- Avocados and tomatoes (and plenty of other fruit and vegetables.)
And it's a two-way street. Americans sold just shy of $300 billion in goods to Mexico in 2018 — cars, machinery, pork and beef. Billions and billions dollars worth of many different type of goods that might be subject to retaliatory tariffs from Mexico.

Illegal aliens cost US taxpayers $133 BILLION out of our paychecks each year!
Then they send $50 BILLION back over the border and do not spend on our economy!
We suffer from their diseases, crime, gangs, drugs, rape, murder, DUI's and theft of our property!
We suffer from the neighborhoods they take over and destroy...they look like ghettos and lower our property taxes, money that goes into services for our communities!
We pay the costs of their courts, lawyers, jails, prison, lawsuits!
TOO BAD CORPORATE AMERICA! START BUILDING USA AGAIN!

THEY HAVE LAND, THEY HAVE RESOURCES...SEND THEM ALL THE HELL BACK HOME TO PROSPER ON THEIR SOIL.
STOP BREEDING IN THE DIRT AND START ACTING LIKE HUMAN BEINGS AND SOLVE YOUR OWN PROBLEMS, QUIT COMING HERE, AND BUILD YOUR OWN BUSINESSES!
WE ARE SICK OF YOU AND SICK OF YOUR NEVER ENDING PROBLEMS!
WE GIVE THEM BILLIONS...AGAINST OUR WILL! KNOCK IT OFF! GIVE THEM NOTHING! IT SOLVES NOTHING, THEY STILL DUMP THEIR UNWANTED PEOPLE OVER THE BORDER. WE DO NOT WANT THEM EITHER! GO HOME!ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

Meanwhile, China's retaliatory tariffs on US exports take effect
From CNN’s Matt Rivers, Steven Jiang and Julia Horowitz

China's retaliatory tariffs on some $60 billion worth of US exports has just officially gone into effect as of 12 p.m. ET.
Beijing said earlier this month that it would increase tariffs on roughly $60 billion worth of US goods on June 1, including American cotton, machinery, grains and aircraft parts.
More than 4,000 items are affected, most of which will carry tariffs of 25% — up from 10% when they were first levied last September.
Some background: The move follows increase in US tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese exports from 10% to 25%, which went into effect May 10. The Trump administration, which has accused China of backtracking onprevious trade commitments, sought to turn up the pressure on Beijing after months of talks failed to produce a breakthrough. But so far, the tit-for-tat penalties have not pushed Beijing toward a deal.

U.S. President Donald Trump says China pays the tariffs he has imposed on $250 billion of Chinese exports to the United States.
But that is not how tariffs work.
China’s government and companies in China do not pay tariffs directly. Tariffs are a tax on imports. They are paid by U.S.-registered firms to U.S. customs for the goods they import into the United States.
Importers often pass the costs of tariffs on to customers - manufacturers and consumers in the United States - by raising their prices.
U.S. business executives and economists say U.S. consumers foot much of the bill through rising prices. . .
