A Border Patrol agent shot and injured a man Friday, after he was physically assaulted while trying to arrest two suspects, officials said.

The incident took place at about 8 p.m., when the agent was responding to reports of two possibly undocumented individuals outside of Douglas, between the international border and Highway 80 near Kings Highway, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release.

The agent located the two men, and while attempting to arrest them, one of the men resisted and began fighting with the agent, the release said.

During the struggle, the suspect gained control of the agent’s collapsible steel baton, after which the agent fired at the suspect, striking him once in the upper leg.

The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to a Tucson hospital for further medical care. He remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds. The agent wasn’t injured during the incident.

The second suspect fled the area, but was later arrested, the release said.

Charges against the two suspects are pending, and the agent will be placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation.

The FBI, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility are all involved in the continuing investigation, the release said.
