Phoenix police announced Wednesday that an undocumented immigrant, who's been deported twice from the country, will serve time in prison for kidnapping a 12-year-old girl.

On Tuesday, a Maricopa County jury convicted Ismael Mayorquin, 47, of Kidnapping following a weeklong trail.

In October of 2007, Mayorquin pulled a 12-year-old girl into a Phoenix alley, according to a probable cause statement by the Phoenix Police Department.

Investigators said a man driving by saw the girl in a struggle with the suspect, confronted Mayorquin and called police.

Officers arrested Mayorquin a short time later.

This marked the third time Mayorquin has been accused of attacking unsuspecting girls, according to police.

As prosecutors researched the case, they discovered that the suspect attacked two teenage girls on two separate occasions during the 1980s. One of the incidents happened in Phoenix, the other happened in California, according to police.

Investigators said Mayorquin also has four prior felony convictions in Arizona and one in California and has been in and out of federal prison for immigration violations.

He was deported at least twice in 1990 and 1993.

Police said his criminal record includes three separate convictions for robbery, and two separate drug related convictions.

His last conviction occurred in 1997 and he was released from the Department of Corrections in 2004.

Mayorquin faces 10 to 24 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

He's scheduled to be sentenced on March 13.

Prosecutors are seeking the maximum sentence.

"The defendant was able to illegally cross the border and commit crimes seemingly at will," stated Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas. "That fact that he has a history of targeting children is especially disturbing. That's why this office considers the illegal immigration crisis to be a matter of public safety. Those who oppose enforcement f our illegal immigration laws are giving criminals like Mayorquin the motivation and the means to continue to come into this state and commit crimes.
