Satellites to monitor trucks crossing the border

Associated Press - November 7, 2007 9:54 AM ET

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The feds are keeping track of commercial trucks traveling to or from Mexico using satellites.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says is it monitoring those trucks using a Global Positioning System satellite tracking device.

A spokeswoman says the decision to keep track of the trucks using GPS technology was made because members of Congress questioned whether Mexican truckers were following federal safety and trade laws.

The yearlong pilot program allowing Mexican truckers to travel anywhere in the U.S. began in September and is a provision of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement.
