KNOXVILLE – Knoxville police announced Tuesday they have a suspect in the murder of Jennifer Lee Hampton in custody on unrelated charges. The homicide suspect was working at the hotel where Hampton was last seen, and he is in the country illegally, police said.

Hampton, 21, was found dead on Saturday. She had been missing a little over a week.

The Alabama woman was in Knoxville to help open a restaurant.

Wednesday, a murder warrant was issued for Valentino Miranda. Miranda is one of two admitted undocumented immigrants arrested for forgery at the Lovell Road hotel where Hampton was last seen.

Miranda is now held on a count of first-degree felony murder. The warrant indicates he is held on $1 million bond.

In a jailhouse arraigment on Wednesday morning, Miranda was informed of the new charges against him and given a court date of October 10.

The warrant also reveals Miranda's wife, Rosa Rodriguez Hernandez, turned over bloody clothing to police. It also indicates that Miranda's key card was used to enter Hampton's room during the early morning hours of Sept. 20.

The medical examiner's office has indicated in a preliminary report the cause of death was strangulation.

Police are awaiting the results of forensic tests on evidence recovered during the investigation. Meanwhile, investigators can not confirm if Hampton was sexually assaulted.

The other man arrested for forgery, Rogelio Melchor, may or may not face charges in connection to Hampton's death, depending on the outcome of evidence analysis.

"This may not be the only charge that is filed. There's a possibility there could be more charges coming as we move forward in the investigation, and the information we have and additional information from the medical examiner's office as well as TBI will dictate additional charges in the future," Knoxville Police Department spokesperson Darrell DeBusk said.

The Days Inn General Manager Nick Patel did not want to talk on camera, but he is looking into improving the hotel's hiring procedures and security.

Patel confirms Miranda was a housekeeper at the hotel.

Patel is also concerned for the safety of Miranda's wife and 18-month-old daughter.

Police arrested Miranda and Melchor the weekend of Hampton's disappearance. Investigators say the men had fake social security cards that looked very close to authentic, but proved to be fraudulent.

Patel says he and his staff are cooperating with investigators and their hearts and prayers are with the Hampton family.

    Mourners remember 'happy girl'

The video monitor at Morrison Funeral Home showed photo after photo of Jennifer Lee Hampton, while a crowd that eventually would fill the chapel somberly filed in Thursday night.

Daniel Giles/TimesDaily Amy Bird and Courtney Graham, classmates of Jennifer Hampton at Waterloo High School, show a pin they are wearing to honor the life of their friend before attending a memorial service Thursday. Hampton was murdered in Knoxville while on a business trip. The seemingly perpetual sweet smile of the former Waterloo resident shone in every shot, from those of her childhood, throughout her teen years and into her young adult life.

But the photos of the 21-year-old were the last ones available, cutting short what was developing to be a story of a wonderful life.

Hampton's life ended Sept. 20 in Knoxville, Tenn., at the hands of a man who officers say used his employee pass key to enter her hotel room at Days Inn and attacked her.

Valentino Vasquez Miranda, 19, an illegal immigrant, is accused of killing Hampton. He is in custody in Knoxville, charged with first-degree murder, a crime that can be punishable by death in Tennessee.

"She was a hard-working little girl," her sister, Amanda May, said after the memorial service at the funeral home. "She didn't drink, smoke or do anything like that.

"And she was always happy. She always had that smile."

Thursday was a grueling day for Hampton's family, who buried her in a private ceremony in the morning. Visitation was Thursday evening, followed by the memorial service that drew family, friends and old classmates of the former Waterloo High School homecoming queen.

May was able to smile through tears for a moment when she recalled her sister being a "text-message queen" who loved keeping in contact with others. She said Hampton would have had a bright future.

"Most kids who are 21 these days are out partying, but not her," May said. "She was a very good, good girl."

"She always had a smile on her face," said family friend Debbie Guyton, who said Hampton was like a daughter to her.

"She was so happy," Guyton said. "She had her whole life ahead of her. You never saw her with a sad face."

For her loved ones, the photos and memories of Hampton, and of her smile, are both soothing and gut-wrenching.

The Rev. Tim Smith was the pastor at Hampton's church, First Freewill Baptist Church, when she was growing up. He told the congregation Thursday night that it's natural to be saddened.

"When we're faced with something like this, we don't know what to think. We don't know what to feel," Smith said. "We just know that it hurts so bad."

But Smith promised them the feeling wouldn't be permanent.

"There's going to be a day when you'll think about Jennifer and you'll smile again," Smith said. "And you'll be able to say, 'Thank you, God. Thank you for allowing her to be a part of my life.' "

He described Hampton as "a young lady who was loved, a young lady who was looking forward to the future, a young lady who was working hard to be all that she could be."

Hampton was last seen on the night of Sept. 19. She was in Knoxville with several co-workers from Mama Blue's restaurant in Florence to help train workers for the opening of a Knoxville store.

Her family went to Knoxville when they learned of her disappearance, and remained there until arrangements were made to return Hampton's body to the Shoals.

Family members say they have been deeply touched by the concern of residents from the Shoals and Knoxville.

"I want to thank all the people in Florence who have given us their prayers and support, as well as those in Knoxville," her stepfather, Tim Senn, said Thursday afternoon.

The family's attorney, Eddie Daniel, has served as a spokesman for them during the ordeal.

"The family is very upset, and they're very tired," he said. "They're also very thankful for all the support the community has supplied. It has been a comfort to them."

Daniel said the family plans to do all it can to assure Hampton's killer is prosecuted. They plan to be in Knoxville on Oct. 10 for Miranda's preliminary hearing.

Knoxville police say Miranda is accused of strangling Hampton. Miranda had been a suspect since Sept. 20, and was kept in custody throughout that time on a forgery charge relating to a bogus Social Security card. Authorities are investigating whether another man, also an illegal immigrant, is involved in Hampton's death, as well.

A bond of $1 million was issued Wednesday for Miranda.

Police say Miranda's wife found bloody clothes that her husband was wearing during the early morning hours of Sept. 20. She turned the evidence over to police. In addition, the investigation has revealed that it was Miranda's pass card that was used to enter Hampton's room that morning.

Hampton's body was found Sept. 27 in Melton Hill Lake, less than 10 miles from the Days Inn.

I don't understand the few Pro ILLEGALS comments at the end of the article. It's a shame that law enforcement in now involved after the murder instead of preventing the the ILLEGAL from entering "our" country. But we can blame the Elitist Politicians and their Elitist Contributors, after all CHEAP LABOR is more important to the ILLEGAL EMPLOYERS and the other Special Interest Groups who PROFIT from the ILLEGALS than the life of ANY United States Citizens.

    Searching for Jennifer Lee Hampton

Department investigators have taken saliva swabs and hair samples from Valentino Vasquez Miranda, the accused killer of former Alabama homecoming queen Jennifer Lee Hampton.

Miranda, 19 and an illegal immigrant, is charged with first-degree murder.

According to documents filed in the case against Miranda, KPD obtained a search warrant for hair and saliva samples, took two mouth swabs and 10 head hairs from him at the Knox County Detention Facility, where he is being held on $1 million bond.

Miranda and his wife, Rosa Rodriguez, worked and lived at the Days Inn motel on Lovell Road, where Hampton was staying on a business trip when she went missing sometime after Sept. 19.

Her nude body was found Sept. 27, floating in Melton Hill Lake. She had apparently been strangled.

Police have alleged that Miranda used a master key card to gain entry to Hampton's room.

Rodriguez says that her husband had left their room at 3:55 a.m. on Sept. 20 and returned between 5:15 and 5:20 a.m., according to an affidavit by Investigator Steven Still. Later that morning when she and her husband cleaned Hampton's empty room, she noticed blood on the bed sheet and a pillow case, the affidavit states.

Rodriguez also has identified some bloody clothing as belonging to her husband, the affidavit states.

Hampton, 21, a native of Waterloo, Ala., had plans to enter nursing school. She had come to Knoxville to help train new workers for the opening of Mama Blue's Buffet restaurant.

Motel records for Miranda's key card, together with his bloody clothes and the tip from his worried wife, led to his arrest, according to court records.

A second man arrested on forgery charges with Miranda has not been charged in connection with Hampton's murder.

The warrant charging Miranda doesn't address how blood got on Miranda's clothes or list a motive for Hampton's killing.

A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 10.

More details as they develop online and in Tuesday's News Sentinel.

Not only did the murdering illegal alien work at the Days Inn, he lived there with his "wife" with a different last name.

    She's not a wife, she's a paramour or the baby's mama.

Grand jury gets murder case in slaying of Jennifer Lee Hampton
Woman testifies vs. lover who's now alleged killer
    By Jamie Satterfield
    Saturday, October 11, 2008

The woman who lived with Valentino Vasquez Miranda said he left her bed as her lover and returned an alleged killer, according to her testimony Friday in the case of an Alabama homecoming queen who was sodomized and slain inside a West Knox County motel room.

Rosa Rodriquez Hernandez said she thought Miranda, her 19-year-old boyfriend and father of her 19-month-old daughter, had gone for a beer when he left the Days Inn room they shared just before 4 a.m. on Sept. 20.

"I woke up (as he was leaving)," she testified in Knox County General Sessions Court. "He asked me for the keys."

Those keys included a master key card that allowed the pair of illegal immigrants, both of whom worked at the Lovell Road motel, access to guest rooms.

Assistant District Attorney General Phil Morton alleges Miranda used that master key card to get inside 21-year-old Jennifer Lee Hampton's room, where he beat her with such force that he broke her tooth, and then raped her, strangled her to death and then dumped her body in Melton Hill Lake.

He sent Hernandez to the witness stand Friday to convince General Sessions Court Judge Andrew Jackson VI to send the felony murder case to a grand jury for review, which Jackson did.

Via an interpreter, Hernandez described how she discovered that the man she sneaked across the border with three years ago might be Hampton's killer.

Hernandez said she isn't sure how long Miranda was gone after he left their room. She had fallen asleep again. When he returned, he disrobed and got into bed, she said. He left his clothes scattered around the room when the pair left a few hours later to clean guest rooms, she said.

Those rooms included the one occupied by Hampton, who was in Knoxville to help train employees of a new restaurant opening here.

"There was some disarray but for me normal," she testified on the condition of Hampton's room.

However, Hernandez noticed blood smears on the sheets as Miranda was stripping them off the bed, and also saw blood on an ice bucket liner that Miranda tossed out with the garbage. She paid it little mind, she said, noting tampons she saw in the bathroom.

But when she returned to their room and picked up Miranda's clothes, she noticed semen stains on his pants and "something like blood" on his pants, shirt and boxers, she testified.

Hernandez said she angrily confronted Miranda about the stains.

"(He responded) that the sperm had stained while being in the house, and the blood he didn't know," she said.

"Did you ask him where he had been (earlier that morning)?" Morton asked.

"(He said,) 'Very far from here,'" she answered.

Hernandez said she pressed Miranda on where he had been. She said he answered, "If I tell you, you are not going to like it. In due time, you will know."

She stashed the stained clothes in a diaper bag and called a female friend, who helped translate for her when Hernandez took the clothing to a receptionist to be turned over to Knoxville Police Department Investigator Steve Still. By then, Hampton had been reported missing. Her body would not be found for another week, however.

Morton revealed at Friday's hearing that DNA testing linked semen stains on Hampton's pants to Miranda and bloodstains on his clothing to Hampton. Scrapings of skin found under her fingernails also were linked by DNA testing to Miranda, he said.

"This defendant is connected to Jennifer Hampton's death through his own DNA, through his own semen, through her blood on his clothing," Morton argued.

Noting Morton only had to show a scant measure of proof to win grand jury review, defense attorney Joseph Fandazz did not mount a counterattack, and Jackson bound the case over to a grand jury. Fandazz did, however, cast doubt on the whereabouts of another illegal immigrant - Hernandez's cousin - who had left an adjacent room around midnight Sept. 20.

Hernandez said her cousin, since charged with forgery but not charged in the slaying, told her that he had gone to a dance and returned at 3 a.m., one hour before Miranda left the couple's room.

Hernandez wept uncontrollably when asked to identify Miranda in court. Also shedding tears Friday were Hampton's relatives, including her mother and sister, both of whom rushed to Knoxville from Waterloo, Ala., when Hampton first went missing.

Again I have to say, it becomes more apparent every day, "Our FAMILIES" are at the mercy of ILLEGALS and their Anchor Babies being murdered, raped, infected with disease, or robbed. We can see the results of the ILLEGAL invasion in our courts every day! But NOT to worry the Chamber of Commerce will get their "cheap labor" increasing "their privatized" PROFITS while socializing the "benefits" for their ILLEGALS on the back of United States Citizens, thanks to Bush, the Congressional Leadership(?), and local elected and appointed officials!!

As he read excerpts from the autopsy report, Morton said Hampton was sexually assaulted, strangled and beaten. He said the autopsy found bruises on her face and arms, a busted lip and a broken tooth. "Clearly from this report, Jennifer Hampton died a somewhat violent death."

Hampton's nude body was found Sept. 27 in Melton Hill Lake about 6 miles from the motel where she was staying while she helped open a Mama Blues restaurant.

First-degree murder is punishable by death in Tennessee, but prosecutors have not decided if they will seek the death penalty.

    Attorney: Death was violent

The last moments of Jennifer Lee Hampton's life were violent, a Tennnessee prosecutor argued Friday as he pushed to have a grand jury hear evidence against the man charged with her death.

Dennis Sherer/TimesDaily During questioning by Assistant District Attorney General Phil Morton, Rosa Rodriguez Hernandez (right) identifies the master key police say her husband used to enter Jennifer Lee Hampton’s motel room. Interpreter Bruni Dopaka is seated in the center.During a preliminary hearing for Valentino Vasques Miranda, 19, who is charged with first-degree murder in Hampton's death, Knox County Assistant District Attorney General Phil Morton said an autopsy revealed the 21-year-old former Waterloo High School homecoming queen was brutally assaulted before she was killed Sept. 20 at a Knoxville motel where Miranda worked and lived.

Morton contends there is much evidence linking Miranda with her death.

Morton said investigators conducting the autopsy found Miranda's DNA under Hampton's fingernails and his semen on her body.

Morton said Hampton's blood was found on clothing seized from Miranda when he was arrested on forgery charges Sept. 20 for having a falsified Social Security card. Investigators have said Miranda, who moved to Knoxville from Mexico, is an illegal immigrant.

"The defendant is connected to the death of Jennifer Lee Hampton," Morton said in his closing argument.

Knox County General Sessions Judge Andrew Jackson VI honored Morton's request to send the case to the grand jury. "I believe clearly the state has proven probable case."

Morton said after the hearing it will probably be December before the case is presented to the grand jury. Grand jury members could be asked to consider additional charges against Miranda, including kidnapping and rape.

Miranda wore headphones Friday as he listened to an interpreter translate the testimony.

First-degree murder is punishable by death in Tennessee, but prosecutors have not decided if they will seek the death penalty.

Defense attorney Joseph Fanduzz said after the hearing that Miranda maintains he is innocent. "There are lots of unanswered questions out there. Now we will go through the legal process to answer them."

Miranda is being held in the Knox County Detention Facility on a $1 million bond.

During Friday's hearing, Miranda's girlfriend, Rosa Rodriguez Hernandez, testified that when she discovered what appeared to be blood and semen on the suspect's clothing, she alerted a friend who contacted a motel employee who called police.

Hernandez testified that as she and Miranda cleaned the motel rooms Sept. 20, she found a small amount of blood on the sheets and pillow cases in room 146, which is where Hampton had been staying.

At times during Hernandez' testimony, members of Hampton's family who were in the courtroom began to cry.

Speaking through an interpreter, Hernandez testified Miranda refused to answer when she asked him about the stains on his clothing. Hernandez testified that when she pressed Miranda for an answer he replied, "If I tell you, you're not going to like it. In due time, you will know."

Hernandez also testified that Miranda left the room they shared at the motel around 4 a.m. Sept. 20, telling her he was going to get a beer. She said Miranda took the keys they used to open doors when they cleaned the motel rooms. When Hernandez went outside to look for him about 15 minutes later, she could not find him.

She testified Miranda returned to the room more than an hour later and went to sleep.

During questioning by Morton, Hernandez identified a collection of keys and a swipe card seized during the investigation as the ones Miranda took with him when he left the room before dawn Sept. 20. She said the keys provided access to every room at the motel.

Police have said hotel records show the swipe card assigned to Miranda and Hernandez was used to open Hampton's door on the morning she disappeared.
