Two men in Danbury detained by police, immigration agent

DANBURY -- Police said two men from Ecuador were scheduled to be turned over this morning to agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The men are Angel Tapia, 36, and Rolando Fajardo, 25, described by Danbury police as "Ecuadorian nationals" wanted on deportation warrants.

A federal agent from ICE came to Danbury Wednesday looking to serve the deportation warrant on Tapia, who was allegedly living in a Lake Avenue apartment. Police set up surveillance at the apartment and took Tapia into custody when he arrived home.

Fajardo, meanwhile, was arrested when he stopped by the apartment before Tapia’s arrival. According to a police incident report, officers stopped Fajardo because he matched Tapia’s description. Police said an identity check revealed that Fajardo has "illegal status," according to the report. Police said Fajardo lived in an apartment on Roger Avenue.

Both men were taken to the police department and held on immigration "detainers."

Police said criminal record checks revealed that Tapia has three prior criminal convictions – two drunken driving convictions and one criminal mischief conviction. Farjardo has convictions on his record for drunken driving and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Danbury Police Chief Al Baker said ICE has stepped up its presence in Danbury. These arrests are occurring about twice a month, the chief said.

"We are seeing their increased presence. I think it’s because they are feeling more pressure from the federal government. This is happening all over the country, not just Danbury."
