TERRE HAUTE— A Mexican citizen who is illegally in the United States was jailed early Thursday on suspicion of criminal confinement and interference with custody, police said.

Armando A. Velediaz, 29, allegedly took his 5-month-old son from the infant’s mother in Terre Haute, Detective David Thompson testified Thursday in a Vigo County court.

The mother told police she has custody of the child and feared Velediaz would take the infant to Tennessee. Velediaz was visiting from Tennessee.

According to police, Velediaz took the infant about 11 p.m. Wednesday from a Terre Haute residence after an argument with a relative of the mother.

Alfredo Z. Rayo, 32, of Morristown, Tenn., also is accused of criminal confinement in connection with the case. Velediaz told police his friend, Rayo, drove him and the infant to Effingham, Ill., where they borrowed money after running out of gas.

The two men were arrested about 5:30 a.m. Thursday after returning to Terre Haute, Thompson said. The infant was unharmed and returned to his mother.

In court, Velediaz admitted to taking the child. “The intention was not to hurt the child,” he said through an interpreter.

Rayo declined comment during the probable-cause hearing.
Both men were held Friday on no bail. They are scheduled to return to court Tuesday.
