Two Migrant Workers Killed in King City Shooting, Suspect Still at Large

Posted: Jun 25, 2013 1:12 PM CDTBy Chloe Beardsley -

KING CITY, Calif. -- Police confirmed two people have been killed after a shooting Tuesday morning along Jane Street.

The victims, a man and a woman were in a car when they were shot at, officers said. The shooting happened around 11:00 a.m. across the street from the KC Child Development Center.

After the woman was shot, she tried walking away from the car, then collapsed. Police found her on the ground. The man was found dead inside the car. The female victim was air-lifted to the hospital, but died when she arrived.

Investigators say the suspect is still on the loose. Police are going door-to-door to interview people to get more information about what happened.

Neighbors told Central Coast news the victims were a couple who had been living together in King City for a long time, but didn't live at the location of the shooting.
According to family, the victims had no enemies and are not sure why they would have been targeted. Both victims were not affiliated with gangs, they were migrant workers who were on their way to visit a relative, family members said.

The suspect's car is described as a light colored sedan. Police don't know how many people were in the car at this point.

    Double homicide in King City

Couple shot from car, say police

A King City couple was shot and killed by an unknown assailant early Tuesday.

The couple, a 35-year-old man and 30-year-old woman, were driving through a migrant camp on Jayne Street when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire, said police Capt. Bruce Miller.

Miller said the couple lived together for five to six years, but Miller did not know if they were married. There is no indication the shooting was motivated by a romantic triangle or by gang activity, he said. Neither scenario was ruled out.

The victims' identities were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Police received reports of the shooting at 10:46 a.m., Miller said. When police arrived on the scene, they found the woman on Jayne Street with a gunshot wound in her side.

She was not breathing and had no pulse. Responders resuscitated her with CPR and transport her to Mee Memorial Hospital, but she died about noon.

Police at the scene found the man dead at the wheel of his SUV, which crashed into a fence a short distance away.

Miller said investigators believe both victims were shot by someone in a passing car and the woman tried to walk away and collapsed.

He said police are "developing leads," but had no suspects in custody late Tuesday.
