NEV: Woman Says She Worked for Sandoval Illegally

They sure the hell are coming out of the "shadow's" now, aren't they!!!

Woman Says She Worked for Sandoval Illegally
    Posted: Oct 11, 2010 4:38 PM PDT Updated: Oct 11, 2010 4:49 PM PDT

Ana Padilla used to be go by her middle name, Maritza. She told us that was when she first came to the United States illegally.

"I come from Guatemala City in 1986," said Padilla.

She told us after working in the States for about ten years, she decided to start her own housekeeping business. "Make some personal cards and put them in a mailbox of houses," said Padilla. "I was like, maybe somebody will need somebody to clean the house."

According to Ana, one of those somebody's was Brian's wife, Kathleen Sandoval. "She told me she could only pay me $40, because she only needed a light housekeeper in the house."

Ana says she cleaned the Sandoval's home every Monday for more than six months. "When I was working for them, they never asked me for documentation."

She says Brian Sandoval was always there while she cleaned, but Kathleen handled most of the business. "The checks all the time were signed by Kathleen, but the checks have both of their names on them."

Nearly 13 years later, Ana and her seven children are now U.S. citizens. She told us she had not seen the Sandovals since working for them, until she caught a gubernatorial debate on television. "I was so happy. I told my husband, 'look, it is Mr. Sandoval.' I'm going to be in the Republican Party and see if we can help him."

Ana says she was happy to see another Latino running for office. She says that elation turned to disappointment when she heard Sandoval say he does not support amnesty for illegal immigrants. "In the time I worked with him, he supported me," said Padilla. "Now he says he does not support Latinos that are already here?"

Ana says she no longer supports anyone in the gubernatorial race. She says she is coming out about this now, because she wants people to know what Sandoval stands for.

We received a statement about Ana Padilla from Sandoval's campaign earlier today.

"Brian and Kathleen do not know this person. Obviously, this is another desperate and dishonest attack by Rory Reid's failing campaign. It is further proof that Rory will say anything to get elected."

Channel 2 News did not learn of this story from the Reid campaign. We actually heard about Ana telling her story on a local Latino radio station and we contacted both campaigns about that time.

How did that happen? Illegal aliens inside of the US are supposed to be prohibited from becoming citizens under current US law.

She came in 1986. There was an amnesty that year....what a coincidence. I notice she had SEVEN children. She is a perfect example of what is wrong with our immigration system and why we can not allow another amnesty to occur.

then if she came in 86 and was part of the amnesty back then. why would she need to show any papers? that amnesty made everyone legal, no matter how long they had been in the US....

am i right? OR am i missing something?

Because they dont immediately become legal when they apply. I forget how long it takes, but in the meantime they are still illegal. I think I remember it takes a couple years to get a green card from an amnesty application. But I cant remember for sure. I just know it is not immediate because they have to do background checks and fingerprint checks and all of that. And with so many people applying at once, it causes a backlog. Then when their application is accepted, they have to leave the country and enter legally....like nothing happened. Nice eh?

More immigrants may qualify for 1986 amnesty
More immigrants may qualify for 1986 amnesty

It is thought that about 10,000 may qualify, said Sharon Rummery, a Citizenship and Immigration Services spokeswoman in the San Francisco regional office.

It was not immediately clear how many live in the Northwest.

CIS officials said the one-year period to reapply will begin Feb. 1. CIS is the government agency that oversees lawful immigration into the United States.

"It's a pretty narrow category," Rummery said.

The reincarnated 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, or IRCA, follows a class-action lawsuit settlement reached in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington in September.

It was brought by the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project on behalf of individuals who were unable to apply or who were deemed ineligible for legalization under IRCA because of issues on whether unlawful status was known to the government, the lawsuit states.

The process is disliked by groups who oppose granting legal status to those who are in the nation illegally.

"Why in the world would our federal government do that when 22 years later, it still doesn't have the ability to process applications filed in the 1986 amnesty program?" asked Jim Ludwick, the president of McMinnville-based Oregonians for Immigration Reform, which lobbies against illegal immigration.

"Our Social Security Administration is already overburdened. How would they deal with the possible millions who might apply?"

He said it is "sheer idiocy" to encourage people to stay here when so many already are out of work.

But Francisco Lopez, director of CAUSA, an immigrant-advocacy group in Woodburn, sees it differently.

"It's about time there was a resolution for the over 10,000 immigrants who were in immigration legal limbo because of the inefficiencies of the immigration office," he said.

"Hopefully this will be the beginning not only for those who were not allowed to apply in 1986, but also any future legalizations for the millions that still have not been able to adjust their immigration status."

CAUSA and other immigrant groups across the nation will be pushing for a moratorium on immigration raids in the first 100 days of the Obama administration.

The latest settlement is the third class-action lawsuit filed against the CIS, previously known as the office of Immigration and Naturalization Services.

A settlement four years ago gave about 2,000 illegal immigrants legal status. IRCA resulted in roughly 2.7 million undocumented immigrants becoming legal permanent residents in 1986.

About 250,000 applications were rejected because applicants had temporarily left the U.S. during the designated grace period and had not lived here continuously.

But groups of undocumented immigrants successfully challenged the disqualifications.

Among the requirements for reapplying is proof of having entered the country legally on a temporary visa before 1982 and overstaying it.

Applicants must have no criminal history and had to have applied between May 5, 1987, and May 4, 1988.

Those who were wrongly rejected and who meet the qualifications will have to pay $585 to reapply. Those who never applied but who may still qualify will have to pay $1,130.

Though legalization is not guaranteed, the government cannot deport those who apply even if their applications are declined.

Gubernatorial Candidate Denies Employing Illegal Immigrant
    Posted: Oct 11, 2010 4:12 PM PDT Updated: Oct 11, 2010 5:38 PM PDT

LAS VEGAS -- A Reno woman is coming forward claiming she was an illegal immigrant when she worked as a housekeeper in Brian Sandoval's home. The Guatemalan immigrant says Sandoval never asked for her work permit when she worked for the Republican gubernatorial candidate 13 years ago.

The Sandoval campaign denies ever knowing Reno resident Anna Padilla. But Padilla, who is now a U.S. citizen, says she's coming forward now, speaking first to Reno Spanish radio stations because Sandoval's stance on immigration enforcement would be harmful to Nevada's Latino community.

Padilla says she illegally immigrated from Guatemala in 1986. The mother of three found work as a housekeeper in Reno. She went by the name Maritza Gomez, using her middle and maiden names.

She claims then-state Assemblyman Brian Sandoval's wife Kathleen hired her after Padilla handed out business cards in their neighborhood October 1996.

"The checks were signed by Mrs. Kathleen and the checks had Brian Sandoval and Kathleen Sandoval's name, address and phone," she said.

But Padilla has no documented proof of those checks. She claims she was told Bank of America only allows access to those records up to seven years. Padilla says she was paid $40 to clean the Sandoval house every Monday.

"To me, it's very big and two rooms over here in the top. Then there was Mr. Brian Sandoval. That office, I don't touch it. I just take the garbage out and I clean the rest," she said.

Padilla presents documents showing she obtained her work permit after the period of time she allegedly worked for the Sandovals. She claims the Sandoval family never asked for her legal status or mentioned an I-9 form needed for Social Security taxes. Padilla says she stopped working for the Sandovals July 1997.

She adds she was excited to learn about Sandoval's candidacy until she discovered his stance on immigration enforcement.

"If he (will) not support the illegals, why is he hiring me at that time," she said.

Padilla contacted Rory Reid's campaign by email.

"Brian has taken a hard stance on immigration and has said more than once the employers should be responsible for who they employ. He's said that multiple times. He's taken a hard stance on immigration. If this was true, then I think it raises some questions on where he stands on this issues," said Reid spokesman Mike Trask.

The Sandoval campaign responded with a statement saying, "Brian and Kathleen do not know this person. Obviously, this is another desperate and dishonest attack by Rory Reid's failing campaign. It is further proof that Rory will say anything to get elected."

First article states "Nearly 13 years later, Ana and her seven children are now U.S. citizens."

Second article states "Padilla says she illegally immigrated from Guatemala in 1986. The mother of three found work as a housekeeper in Reno."

So I suppose she had 3 illegal children when she came and then dropped 4 anchors.
