EASTON, N.Y. -- State police are searching for a man they say assaulted a Trooper during a traffic stop Friday night in Washington County.

30-year old Abel Jimenez is wanted in connection with the incident, which occurred at 10:10 p.m. on South Cambridge Road in the Town of Easton.

According to state police, it all began when Jimenez' wife called authorities following a domestic dispute between the couple. Jimenez, who is said to be in the country illegally, then left his residence in Easton in a white Dodge Dakota with his 7-year old daughter.

Jimenez' truck was spotted by Trooper Joseph P. Smith, a 9-year veteran, who heard the domestic call. At some point during the stop, Jimenez attempted to drive away, dragging Trooper Smith.

Jimenez was able to speed away, leaving Smith behind.

Smith sustained several injuries in the incident and was taken to Albany Medical Center. His exact condition is not known at this time.

Police say Jiminez later ditched his truck in a nearby field, along with his daughter. They recovered the girl and truck Saturday morning.

Jimenez is described as 5'9", weighing 200 pounds, with medium complexion and a scar on the front of his nose. He was last seen in the vicinity of Gifford Road and Lees Crossing Road in Easton, wearing a blue shirt, jeans, and white Puma sneakers.

If you have any knowledge on the whereabouts of Jimenez, you are asked to call state police at (51 583-7000.
