McALLEN - More than 220 criminal illegal immigrants have faced federal prosecution in South Texas since the start of the fiscal year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Wednesday.

The migrants, many of whom had been previously convicted of violent crimes such as burglary and assault, were arrested as part of a nationwide roundup that netted more than 3,800.

Many had been arrested and deported previously for entering the United States illegally, the agency said.

The total so far this year is more than double the number of criminal illegal immigrant cases reported by ICE in all of fiscal year 2007.
