Border Patrol to install rescue beacons in Deming, Lordsburg area

DEMING — The U.S. Border Patrol is installing emergency rescue beacons in the open desert.

"They could be used by a rancher, rockhounder or hunter," said Rick Moody, agent-in-charge of the Deming Border Patrol station. "They're being put out there to assist in aiding any person in distress."

They would also be available for immigrants crossing the desert, to summon help in an emergency.

Three beacons are planned for the Deming area, four for Lordsburg. An additional three are to be added later in the Lordsburg area.

The hope, the Border Patrol says, is that the beacons will help reduce the number of deaths occurring in the desert.

"We designed them to go in what has traditionally been the highest traffic areas... away from the border, though," Moody said.

He described the units as "like a pole that has a light on top of it. It flashes when a button is pushed and sends an instant message to the Border Patrol Station that opens a communication device where they can talk back and forth."

"This is part of our border safety initiative, which we have been using for years to increase response to people in distress in the desert."

Moody said he hopes the beacons will be installed within a month or two.

Locations —which he did not disclose — have been determined and the agency is talking with landowners who might be impacted by placement.
Arizona has used the devices quite successfully for a few years, he said.

"They cost several hundred dollars," Moody said. "We have to make sure they are deployed in the right way. We don't want to put something out there that is not going to be used or responded to in the right way."

Gee why not open Mexican Resturants to serve free food and drink, wouldn't want illegal alien invaders to have to bring there own food and beer.

How likely is it a 'person in distress' will be close to a rescue beacon? Any rancher, rockhound hunter or illegal alien group more than likely has a cell phone. The 'lights' will be used by smugglers to divert the attention of the border patrol. They will pay someone to go to the light, set it off, and while the border agents are busy with the 'rescue', the smugglers will cross the border with their drugs or human cargo in another area.

Why not use beacon lights for detection purposes--use electronic sensors that detect humans walking to set off the lights.

According to accounts I have read, less than 300 a year die crossing the border annually while 25 American citizens die daily at the hands of illegal immigrants. I don't want anyone to die.

The best way to prevent the deaths of illegal immigrants crossing the border is to stop illegal border crossings.
A number who die crossing the border are abandoned by their groups and left to die so who is the inhumane party in this equation?
    1. 14 year old girl died--the group she was traveling with (including at least one family member) left her when she couldn't keep up with the group.
    2. A woman broke her leg and was left beind by her group. A second group encountered her and they too left her. When the border patrol captured the second group. a man told the agents about her. Border agents rescued her.
    3. A mother and her 7 year old son were abandoned by their group and rescued by border agents.

Makes it easier for the drug runners and smugglers too, why not add a bulls eye too?

    Pure stupidity!
