New border patrol chief settles into job

GRAND FORKS, N.D. The border patrol chief for the Grand Forks sector says new technology should make it easier for his agents to guard the border with Canada.

Scott Baker has been in charge of the North Dakota and Minnesota border for a couple of months. His appointment comes at a time when the border patrol is adding equipment like remote sensors, cameras and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Baker says the upgrades should allow his agents to keep real-time tabs on border security. He says since they can't cover the entire 900-mile area, it's important to -- quote -- "be in the right place at the right time" -- unquote.

The border patrol is expected to be putting unarmed drones into action this fall. The planes will likely be flown by pilots in Riverside, California.
