AUSTIN -- The Austin City Council says it can not support the controversial anti-day labor site House Bill 904 filed in the State Legislature.

The bill would make making building or operating day labor sites with undocumented immigrants illegal. There is already a day labor site in Central Austin, and there is currently negotiation on the construction of a second site.

"It really isn't about employment practices, it's about immigrant bashing. If we think it's inappropriate to hire illegal immigrants, then the laws that we are affecting should speak to that issue," said Austin City Councilman Mike Martinez.

The bill is being reviewed by the State Affairs Committee.
