Immigration reform remains the only solution

President Bush is fond of saying that illegal immigrants and other immigrant workers do “jobs that Americans won't do.â€

What rubs me the wrong way is its a well known fact that most agriculture workers come and work only long enough til they can find a higher paying job and then they move on.

I once saw Jerry Brown of California on the news saying just that.... that America needs a constant supply of illegals to fill the ag jobs because so many move on to construction and other jobs.

I wish I could find that news clip of Jerry Brown... if anyone has seen it and knows where its posted let me know.

But, for the sake of argument, let's assume it's true that Americans would eagerly do even the hardest jobs if wages were high enough. It is not just about the wages. There could be other factors involved. Lately, there seems to be evidence that Americans will do jobs they once shunned if times are hard enough. And, as we all know, times are pretty hard now.

Our local Farm Bureau says exactly the same thing, and they at least OPPOSE giving illegals green cards for that reason, instead they say they should just be given H2A visas. You know with the recent changes Bush made to this program they probably would not oppose the SAVE Act.

When the economy rebounds, the illegal immigrants will likely return. Americans will go back to turning up their noses at the most undesirable jobs. And we'll be back where we started – with jobs to fill and no one to fill them.

Bull......we have people and with the huge amount of legal immigrants and people growing up and into the work force, it will more than compensate for those dying. IF....it rebounds then maybe we'll have the time to find a way to LEGALLY bring in those we might actually need and stop the flow of illegal workers.....or invent something that ends the need for workers in those fields. Maybe this time we'll open the doors to some other country besides Mexico for the wave. I'm sure there's other poor countries where people need work as well.

Not to mention....why have the Dream Act and bother trying to educate them when eventually, even ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS will "turn their noses up to the most undesireable jobs". They already are, so then what? More illegal workers to do the jobs the other illegal workers refuse to do?
