HIDALGO – A Border Patrol agent came under attack Thursday night from a suspected illegal immigrant throwing rocks.

The agent suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. His assailant fled to Mexico.

“There was not much visual identification” of the attacker, said Border Patrol spokesman Oscar Saldaña. “We think he was a male and heading south, swimming to Mexico. We suspect he was an illegal immigrant.”

The attack occurred between 9 and 10 p.m. Thursday near the Hidalgo-Reynosa border crossing.

With the federal government shifting more resources to border security, agents will face more threats from drug smugglers and illegal immigrants, Saldaña said.

“Just hazards of the job,” Saldaña said. “We anticipate more incidents like this because me have more agents on patrol.”
