Border Patrol agents attempt to pull over a vehicle for a routine traffic stop but there was nothing routine about it.

The driver, wanted on several outstanding warrants, attempts to flee and as our Concetta Callahan reports the agent fires his weapon to keep the suspect from running him over.

The Border Patrol agent shot at the man twice but he still managed to get away.

Dimmitt County sheriff's deputies, however, caught up with the suspect at a nearby hospital.

At about 9-30 this morning a Border Patrol agent and his partner attempted to pull over a '96 Ford Taurus near downtown Carrizo Springs.
Randy Clark - patrol agent, Carrizo Springs

"We know one suspect who was identified as a 26 year old male from the community, a young lady we understand to be his girlfriend, and his biological son in the vehicle as well."

None of the occupants had identification.

As the agent continued with his investigation the driver tried to flee almost running over the agent.

"In that process, the agent was in the line of travel of the vehicle and he ordered the suspect to stop and at the same time he fired his weapon."

"After being shot by the border patrol agent in this brushy area."

"The suspect then drives himself to this hospital for emergency care."

The border patrol agent shot at the suspect twice... But only struck him once.

As you can see here, there is blood all over the driver's side door.

Joel Gonzalez - Sheriff, Dimmit County

"Our understanding as far as where he got shot at was in his arm area and that same bullet that actually hit him entered and exited through his arm and entered into his midsection."

Officers believe that initially the suspect tried to flee the scene in an attempt to flee arrest.

"We know now through preliminary investigation that the possible motive for him to actually flee from the agents was that there were outstanding warrants from the sheriff's office for his arrest."

The suspect has been flown to University Hospital in San Antonio and has already undergone surgery.

The FBI and Texas Rangers are jointly investigating the case.
