A routine traffic stop Wednesday night ended with U.S. Border Patrol agents being shot at along the Rio Grande south of San Juan, authorities said.

It happened shortly after 5 p.m. south of Military Highway and Stewart Road.

Border Patrol officials told Action 4 News that the agents were attempting to stop a pickup during an immigration check when it took off.

The driver of the pickup and a passenger headed down a winding dirt road, but finally came to a stop near the river, authorities said.

The suspects ended up ditching the truck and swam into the river, which is when agents said they heard gunshots.

"When Border Patrol agents were following the vehicle they heard what sounded like gunshots being fired at their direction," said Oscar Saldana, a Border Patrol spokesman. "Nobody's hurt. Nobody is injured. No agents were injured."

The suspects managed to escape, authorities said.

Inside the back of the truck, agents discovered more than 1,200 lbs. of marijuana.

    The case is under investigation.

I suppose we should be glad it was not the border patrol who was doing the shooting else they would be under investigation by now!

I'm so worried about those border patrol agents on the border. They need to feel their government is behind them 200%. Perhaps someday we will have a leadership that will.

Did the BP agents have the proper authorization from their field supervisor to pursue the fleeing suspects?
