BROWNSVILLE — The Del Rio sector Border Patrol has replaced a roadside trailer with a state-of-the-art, all-weather checkpoint, Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday.

The new checkpoint on U.S. Highway 90 opened Monday.

It operates one lane each for trucks and normal passenger vehicles, with Border Patrol agents working under an 18,000-square-foot canopy and processing offenders in a new, 4,000-square-foot, building.

The facility is a few miles away from the old checkpoint, which will be closed. It was built on land donated by the Uvalde County Sheriff's office, which used drug forfeiture funds to buy the land.
