CORPUS CHRISTI - Border Patrol agents had their work cut out for them Thursday morning. A van packed with about 2 dozen illegal immigrants tore through a muddy field. Officials say they were trying to flee from Nueces County Constables.

Several of the passengers were escorted to patrol vehicles in handcuffs after agents spotted them in the field.

Chief Deputy Margarito Gonzalez with Nueces County Constables Precinct 3, says he spoke to one of the undocumented persons and says there may have been more than expected.

"I've talked to one of the undocumented persons and he's that there was over 20 in the van," Chief Deputy Gonzalez said.

The undocumented people were rounded up from this open field off FM 892 near County Road 10 just after 8 in the morning. All because the driver rolled through a stop sign.

"Refused to stop came Eastbound on FM 70 then turned on 892 approximately half a mile from where we are, the van ended up going into the field about 50 yards," Chief Deputy Gonzalez said.

That's when agents got on foot to start searching for the fleeing suspects. Chief Deputy Gonzalez says 11, both males and females were caught. He asked one of them where they were from.

"He said he was from Michoacan, Mexico, everybody else that has been detained I'm not sure, the count of female and male I don't know we've seen both," Chief Deputy Gonzalez said.

While it's unclear, how many people were actually in the car, police say it is registered to a Houston address. Turns out, officials say that's where the undocumented people were headed. The van has already been impounded.

By noon, at least 15 more people were still on the loose somewhere in the same field. Corpus Christi and Kingsville agents were searching the ground, Chief Deputy Gonzalez says more help was called.

"Border patrol was able to get a helicopter on the way from the Corpus office," he said.

For now, the people caught were turned over to Border Patrol.
