McALLEN, Texas — Rio Grande Valley law enforcement and government officials tell members of the Border Security Council at its first meeting that funding for more officers and better technology and equipment is needed to help secure the Texas-Mexico border.

But several speakers at the meeting in McAllen also ask the council to help stop the construction by the federal government of a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Members of the council say the fence is a federal issue and their focus is on securing the border by stopping drug and human trafficking and any terrorism-related activities.

The council plans on holding meetings Tuesday in Laredo and Wednesday in El Paso.
