CBP Cashes in on Outbound Currency Inspections
Officers Seize $138,000; Traveler Arrested
(Wednesday, June 10, 2009)
Sterling, Va. – Customs and Border Protection officers seized nearly $138,000 from three travelers – more than $102,000 in a single seizure – during currency inspections at Washington-Dulles International Airport during the past five days. One traveler was charged on Monday with bulk cash smuggling.
There is no limit on how much currency travelers can import to or export from the United States, however 31 U.S.C. 5316 requires travelers to declare amounts exceeding $10,000 in U.S. dollars or equivalent foreign currency.
