Congressman discusses issues at Lewisville town hall meeting

Presidential candidate John McCain is stronger on border control than President George Bush, U.S. Congressman Michael Burgess said at a town hall meeting at the W. T. Bolin Administrative Center in Lewisville Thursday night.

Burgess told the capacity crowd of more than 200 people that he and other members of Congress had met with McCain to discuss the issue of illegal immigrants being in the United States.

Burgess said he believes McCain would do more toward controlling the border between the United States and Mexico than either of the two leading Democratic presidential candidates. McCain, a Republican, is expected to face either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama in the November general election.

McCain, who previously had offered a guest-worker plan which many interpreted as an amnesty plan, has spoken out strongly in favor of more border controls in recent months.

While not offering a total plan for border control, Burgess said that the clearing of brush on the north side of the Rio Grande would be a major step in stopping immigrants from entering the United States illegally.
