Controversial Immigration Bill
KFOX News

A Texas lawmaker is trying to pass a controversial immigration bill that has some El Paso residents angry.

Ruth De Jesus from west El Paso said that is what this county was founded on. She disagrees with the proposal. Texas State Rep. Leo Berman is proposing a bill saying citizenship should not be automatic for the children of immigrants.

"I think if people pay taxes they deserve what they have in the United States," David Matallenes told KFOX-TV on Saturday.

Many people interviewed by KFOX disagreed with the proposal, but some said they can relate to the other side of the argument.

But to others, the mere fact the proposal is in place is unsettling.

Berman said he hopes the issue ends up in federal court. Hispanic activists said the bill has little chance of passing, and that if it somehow did the governor would never sign it.
