Dallas County will resume accepting Mexican ID cards for car transactions

The Dallas County tax assessor-collector said Monday his office will resume accepting identification cards issued to Mexican citizens for motor vehicle transactions such as registrations and title transfers.

John Ames decided a week ago to stop accepting the Matricula Consular de Alta Seguridad identification cards because of their use in some fraudulent transactions. But Ames reversed himself after learning that some Mexican nationals living in Dallas County have no other form of identification, which is needed to register vehicles, his office said.

The Mexican government issues the cards through its consulate offices to Mexican citizens living in other countries regardless of their emigration status. Many U.S. cities and police departments accept the card as identification as do certain banks for financial transactions.

Norman Kasal, spokesman for the tax office, said Ames' original decision was based on the fact that it's not possible to verify the matricula consular cards' authenticity or legitimacy. In addition, some have used fraudulent cards in such motor vehicle transactions as registrations and title transfers, he said.

The original decision was made after discussions with Texas Department of Motor Vehicle officials and local law enforcement, Kasal said.

The office will try to verify the validity of such cards, Kasal said, even though it may be time-consuming.

"It's a lot of work, but we're willing to do it," he said.

For example, if someone submits registration or title documents on behalf of a vehicle owner along with the person's Mexican ID card, the tax office will try to contact the cardholder to verify that the card and transaction are valid, he said.

"As agents of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, my office makes every effort possible to ensure the accuracy and legality of the transactions we process," Ames said in a prepared statement. "Our decision to not accept or accept various forms of ID is based on the ability to verify the authenticity of that ID."

The tax office, which has satellite offices throughout the county, is encouraging vehicle owners who use the matricula consular cards as their only form of identification to conduct their vehicle transactions directly with the tax office.

"By doing so, we can provide you with your registration and license tags faster and easier and you can avoid paying unnecessary costs to a third party," a tax office statement said.

The tax office is available at 214-653-7811 to answer motor vehicle and property tax questions 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. More information and forms are available at www.dallascounty.org.

This Is aiding and abetting an Illegal to commit a series of crimes... If the Illegal that gets a car that he or she does not have a license to drive,then drives the car and causes a fatality, just how many people are legally responsible for the killing You tell me....

The shouldn't be driving or purchasing anything in America without a passport. That's what they should be using for ID, not that damn Matricula Consular Card.

Maybe we should all ditch our drivers licenses, passports, birth certificates, SSN's and go to the local flea markets and purchase a freaking Matricula Consular card for five bucks!! Then we can drive without a license, without insurance and get off scott free when we have an accident or injure someone!! Or let's use our Matricula Consular card to get a loan, buy a house or get a line of credit? Geez, let's not stop there! Let's just let everyone who wants to come here just walk across our border and we can put a lei around their neck, present them a dozen roses and a check for $1,000,000??!!!! Wait a minute, how about giving them a free car so that they can then drive across the country and decide where they want to live?? Why not have a free, fully furnished house waiting for them? How's that????!!! Want more???!!!

If it is so authentic then why doesn't Mexico recognize it?
