    EDINBURG - Former Hidalgo County commissioner Sylvia Handy and nine others are facing state felony charges. Handy is currently serving time in federal prison. Last year, she was convicted on charges of tax evasion and harboring illegal aliens.

    HIDALGO COUNTY - The troubles for former Hidalgo County Commissioner Sylvia Handy are not over. She is expected to face state charges.

    The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office called a press conference Monday on the charges. They say Sylvia Handy and nine co-conspirators will be charged with state felony crimes. Six of the nine co-conspirators are in custody. They are expected to face charges of theft, engaging in organized criminal activity and tampering with records.

    Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino says the purpose of this investigation is about tying up loose ends. The 10 people are accused of conspiring to steal close to $300,000 in county money. These charges are ones not previously addressed before by federal authorities.

    Handy is currently serving time on federal charges. She turned herself in to federal authorities at a federal prison camp in Bryan in October. She was sentenced to serve two and a half years in prison.

    Handy resigned as Precinct 1 commissioner in March 2010 after pleading guilty to filing a fraudulent tax return and harboring illegal immigrants.
