Fox: House Bills Unfair For Immigrants

Mar 27, 2007

During a visit to San Antonio, former Mexican President Vicente Fox said Tuesday he's concerned about dozens of immigration bills to be discussed at a hearing scheduled for Wednesday at the State Capitol.

He said he's particularly concerned about House Bill 28, which if passed, would restrict employment and health care benefits for children of immigrants in Texas, including children born on American soil.

"That's absolutely crazy, unfair, immoral," Fox said. "Immigrants here in the U.S. contribute strongly to the productivity and the ability of this economy."

Fox commented about the hearing during a lecture at Trinity University about strained relations between Mexico and the U.S.

He told the students that he finds House Bill 858 offensive because it gives a peace officer the authority to arrest a person on suspicion of illegal immigration rather than reporting them to immigration officials.

Fox told the crowd Mexican immigrants should not be mistaken for terrorists. Fox said Texans and Americans should remember that Mexico is their friend and it contributes economically by purchasing more products and services annually than Italy, France, Spain, Germany and Great Britain put together.

Fox served as the Mexican president from 2000 to 2006.

During that time he openly supported migration among Mexican citizens to the U.S. and joined George W. Bush in pushing for a guest worker program.

The proposal sparked controversy throughout the U.S.
