LA JOYA - A tip led La Joya police on a 30 mile chase that ended with the seizure of more than 400 pounds of pot and the arrest of one man, said Police Chief Jose Del Angel.

The chase began when officers were given the heads-up about a truck that was reported stolen out of San Juan, Del Angel said. When police tried to pull the driver of the truck over, he began heading north and didn’t stop for about 30 miles, he said.

The chase ended when the driver finally pulled over and began running, the police chief said. A U.S. Border Patrol helicopter, which was called in to assist, was able to track and apprehend the suspect before he was able to get away. Police later identified him as 24-year-old Arturo Alaniz from Michoacán, Mexico. He was carrying more than 400 pounds of marijuana in the truck, police said.

Alaniz, a Mexican national who has been deported several times, was charged with possession of marijuana and evading arrest, Del Angel said. The bond for evading arrest was set at $50,000, while the bond for procession was set at $1 million.
