A federal judge today sentenced an illegal immigrant from Honduras to more than eight years in prison for trying to rip off a smuggling load at gunpoint.

According to federal invesigators, Kenneth Barahona, 19, was wearing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement T-shirt when he tried to abduct up to 30 illegal immigrants from a Houston stash house at gunpoint.

Barahona, who pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to harbor illegal immigrants and being an illegal immigrant in possession of a firearm, was sentenced today to 100 months by U.S. District Judge Sim Lake.

Barahona and an accomplice forced their way into a house in the 220 block of Vashti Drive on March 29 with plans to rob the smugglers and take the illegal immigrants hostage and extort their family members, according to court records.

Barahona and one of the smugglers exchanged gunfire and Barahona was shot six times, authorities said.
