TECATE — A suspected illegal immigrant was shot Tuesday during a robbery attempt by men posing as fellow border crossers, federal authorities said.

The 32-year-old man from Mexico was shot in the left calf. His injury was not considered serious, but he was taken to a hospital for treatment, said Jerry Conlin, spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol.

Conlin said the victim was with a group of about 10 people, including his wife, in an area just north of the U.S.-Mexico border near Tecate.

While in a remote area about 11:30 a.m., three men in the group tried to rob the others at gunpoint and the man was shot, authorities said.

Border Patrol agents were alerted by sensors to activity in the area. Using binoculars, they saw the bandits and the rest of the group run back into Mexico.

Agents treated the injured man until Cal Fire paramedics arrived to give additional aid.

Mexican authorities are assisting the Border Patrol in the investigation.
