New developments are expected today in the criminal investigation into allegations of immigration violations by Shipley Do-Nuts and its management, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Houston.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided Shipley Do-Nuts, a family-owned chain, on April 16 and detained 20 suspected illegal immigrants employed at the facility on North Main Street.

At the time it was the biggest immigration raid in over a year in the Houston area.

But criticism has swirled around the Shipley raid because no manager or owner has been charged with crimes for employing undocumented workers. Employers who knowingly hire unauthorized workers can face criminal charges and fines.

U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle is expected to be joined by Robert Rutt, the special agent in charge of Houston's ICE office, for a news conference at 1 p.m. today to announce the new developments, according to a release issued this morning by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
