Man accused in sexual assault of young teen caught at border

Juan Thomas Diaz-Avila A man accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old Valley girl was arrested in Tucson while he was being held by Border Patrol agents awaiting deportation to Mexico.

Juan Thomas Diaz-Avila, 28, allegedly sexually assaulted the girl Thursday in the southwest part of the county, according to a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office news release.

A spokesman said the girl's mother had dated Avila and the assault was reported when the girl's mother took her to a Valley hospital.

Sheriff's detectives began searching for Avila and found he had been stopped on another matter and was being held at the Tucson detention facility, waiting to be deported on immigration charges.

Avila was returned to Phoenix and booked into the 4th Avenue Jail, charged with sexual assault of a minor.
