N.Y.: Shot fired during dispute among workers in Kiryas Joel
Shot fired during dispute among workers in Kiryas Joel
November 19, 2007
Kiryas Joel — State police are looking for two Mexican immigrant workers, one of whom fired a shot into the ground during a dispute with two other Hispanic men on Sunday in front of Landau's Supermarket in the Village of Kiryas Joel.
Police say the confrontation started when the two Mexican men, employees of Friendly Supermarket on Satmar Drive, recognized two other Hispanic men who they had fought with a week before. The latter two men were making a delivery at the supermarket for J&J Dairy Delivery based out of Brooklyn.
The dairy delivery men declined to fight and drove off to their next delivery, prompting the two local supermarket workers to follow them, police said. The two men then confronted the dairy delivery truck driver and passenger at Landau's, police said.
One of the two suspects pulled a .380-caliber handgun from his waistband and fired the weapon into the ground, according to police. Police responded to the call around 1 p.m.
Both parties fled the scene. Police are looking for the suspects, who fled in a blue four-door Volkswagen. They could be charged with menacing, reckless endangerment and illegal possession of a handgun. Police said the last charge is assumed, since the two suspects are known illegal immigrants, and therefore would have been unable to buy the weapon legally.
Police officials declined to give the names of the suspects until the investigation is complete and arrests made. Any one with information should call 782-8311.
