TX- Rep. Lewis proposes illegal immigration refrom

A bill written by state Rep. Tryon Lewis, R-Odessa, echoing the illegal immigration reforms passed in Arizona, was referred to committee late last week.
House Bill 532 is one of three bills he has filed so far in the 82nd Legislative Session focusing on illegal immigration. HB 1084, filed Feb. 2, proposes making it a crime for non-U.S. citizens to register to vote. HB 804, filed in January, calls for amending the Election Code to make it a crime for non-citizens to vote.
House Bill 532 was filed by Lewis on Jan. 6 and was referred to the State Affairs Committee on Friday. The law cracks down on illegal immigration in several ways.
If this were to become law, police officers would be allowed to arrest suspected illegal aliens without a warrant. However, it requires an officer to have probable cause that the person is not a citizen and is in the United States unlawfully.
This bill will lead to racial profiling, Art Leal, president of Una Voz Unida of Odessa, said.
