Rights group wants to block drivers license rules

AUSTIN, Texas — A civil rights group is asking a federal judge to block new Texas driver's license requirements for immigrants.

The Texas Civil Rights Project contends the new rules discriminate against people in the United States legally.

Those new rules require non-citizens to show official work authorization proof every six months to renew their licenses. Supporters of the new policy, including Gov. Rick Perry, say the rules are intended to keep illegal immigrants from getting licenses and fight fraud and identity theft.

The lawsuit seeks a court injunction to block enforcement of the requirements. A hearing is scheduled for Monday afternoon in a U.S. District Court in Austin.
