TX-Rights group wants to block drivers license rules

Rights group wants to block drivers license rules

AUSTIN, Texas — A civil rights group is asking a federal judge to block new Texas driver's license requirements for immigrants.

The Texas Civil Rights Project contends the new rules discriminate against people in the United States legally.

Those new rules require non-citizens to show official work authorization proof every six months to renew their licenses. Supporters of the new policy, including Gov. Rick Perry, say the rules are intended to keep illegal immigrants from getting licenses and fight fraud and identity theft.

The lawsuit seeks a court injunction to block enforcement of the requirements. A hearing is scheduled for Monday afternoon in a U.S. District Court in Austin.

I think that is a great idea. More states should adopt those rules.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The long-anticipated challenge to the Department of Public Safety’s requirement that noncitizens prove legal immigration status for a driver's license will be in federal court this afternoon for a first court hearing.

Civil rights groups filed the case in federal court in January on behalf of three women who were in the country legally but were denied a drivers license. The Texas Civil Rights Project, which represents the plaintiffs, has filed initial motions to stop the Department of Public Safety from applying the new rules.

The Department of Public Safety, represented by the Attorney General’s Office, filed its response on Friday. In its brief, the state argues that no one is guaranteed a constitutionally protected “rightâ€

Stupid people! Americans have to take a driver's exam, written and on the road, to prove we are capable of driving and following the rules of the road. Why aren't "immigrants" required to do the same?

Americans must present multiple forms of ID to get a license, in addition to proof of insurance and the above mentioned tests. Why aren't "immigrants" required to do the same?

LEGAL immigrants have VALID (read not stolen or forged) ID, what possible problem could there be? There's something not right with this story. Do those three women even know how to drive? Have they ever held a US drivers license?

Don't talk about "civil rights' when Americans civil rights are being violated by illegal aliens and their so-called advocates, not to mention our government who bend over backwards for them!

    Procedures are cumbersome and inflexible?
If they can't do their jobs to meet the new requirements, let's see how these folks do as employees of the janitorial department.
It sounds like the folks with the Texas Civil Rights Project are really trying to emulate the ACLU, and probably have backing from the US Chamber.

So what if they can't get a state driver's license? The US is party to the International Driving Convention and any person here, legally or not, should have obtained an International Driving Permit before they arrived here. This issue has already been decided. Stare decisis! And if we don't recognize a certain country's citizens to drive here---that is tough! We have a right to regulate who can drive here.

    nternational Driving Permits
Although many countries do not recognize U.S. driver's licenses, most countries accept an International Driving Permit (IDP). IDPs are honored in more than 150 countries outside the United States. (See AAA’s application form for the list of countries). An IDP functions as an official translation of a U.S. driver's license into ten foreign languages. These licenses are not intended to replace valid U.S. state licenses and should only be used as a supplement to a valid U.S. license. IDPs are not valid in an individual’s country of residence. Before departure, you can obtain an IDP from an automobile association authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs. Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic (1949) authorizes the U.S. Department of State to empower certain organizations to issue IDPs to those who hold valid U.S. driver’s licenses. The Department designated the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance as the only authorized distributors of IDPs.
