Round Rock ISD settles immigration walkout case

There is a settlement in the federal lawsuit between the City of Round Rock and students arrested during immigration protests last year.

The lawsuit was filed by the Texas Civil Rights Project on behalf of 70 students and their families. The students left school to take part in immigration reform protests in March of 2006. More than 200 were arrested.

As part the settlement, the city will dismiss any pending curfew or disruption of class charges against the students.

In addition, the plaintiffs agree to attend one three-hour speaker series session involving discussions regarding civics education.

The city and Round Rock ISD must reimburse the Texas Civil Rights Project for more than $50,000 worth of attorneys' fees.

The city will establish a fund that will pay $400 to students wishing to have their records expunged.

That money would pay for the legal fees.

Round Rock ISD must also seal the discipline records relating to the students' actions on March 30 and 31 of last year.

The City of Round Rock's settlement costs will be paid by the city's insurance carrier.
