Overcrowding at the McAllen border patrol station may be contributing to the spread of scabies among detained immigrants present in the U.S. illegally.

Border patrol is not releasing numbers, but Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples toured the station today.

He said there are more than 1,000 people detained, and that is more than three times the capacity.

Staples and visiting agriculture commissioners from other states said they are concerned with the overcrowding at the McAllen station.

They are also concerned with the number of immigrants with scabies.

“They are having some real health problems and it’s a cost to the American people, and that’s why securing our border and reforming our failed immigration system can make those problems go away,” Staples said.

Border Patrol union spokesperson Chris Cabrera said about 10 to 25 percent of the immigrants detained at the McAllen station at any given time have scabies, and with overcrowding there is a real possibility of it spreading.

"We are having a lot of people coming in with the disease and it seems to be spreading, not just in the McAllen station but throughout the valley and to some of our agents,” Cabrera said.

Cabrera says he is also concerned with the skin disease spreading to the public because many don’t shows signs of having the skin disease until two weeks after catching it.

We did request information from border patrol and the Department of Homeland Security on Monday, but we are still waiting for a response.

Border Patrol detains 1,000 people at McAllen Station, agents warn about overcrowding

    Posted: Wednesday, May 21, 2014 9:53 pm

    Dave Hendricks | The Monitor

McALLEN — Border Patrol agents detained roughly 1,000 people Wednesday morning at the McAllen Station, severely overcrowding the modest building on Military Highway.

Without anywhere else to keep them, agents temporarily detained many immigrants who entered the United States illegally inside the McAllen Station’s “sally port” — basically a gated garage. The makeshift holding area, though, isn’t anything new.

“It’s inhumane, any way you look at it,” said Agent Chris Cabrera, vice president of National Border Patrol Council Local 3307, who estimated the McAllen Station was designed to hold roughly 300 people. “And it’s dangerous for our agents.”

Agents assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Sector apprehended about 140,000 people from Oct. 1 to May 16, the federal fiscal year to-date, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data provided by U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar. That’s nearly 65 percent higher than the same period last year, when the Rio Grande Valley Sector recorded more apprehensions than any other nationwide.

Immigrants from nations other than Mexico — commonly called OTMs by Border Patrol agents, an acronym for “Other Than Mexicans” — have posed a particular vexing problem. During the past two years, the majority have arrived from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

They travel through Mexico and attempt to cross the Rio Grande.

“We’re basically playing defense on the one yard line,” said Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, who recently traveled to Mexico City for meetings with President Enrique Peńa Nieto and other Mexican leaders.

Mexico plans to bolster security on the country’s southern border, Cuellar said, deploying a three-layer approach design to deter illegal immigration.

“We’ve got to look at this as a region,” Cuellar said, adding that the United States and Mexico should work together to improve border security. “It’s not only what’s going on at the goal line, which is our border.”

Processing detainees who aren’t from Mexico also requires additional paperwork, which bogs down agents for several hours, Cabrera said. Agents now routinely apprehend people faster than they’re able to process them, which leaves the McAllen Station overflowing with immigrants.

Border Patrol wouldn’t confirm any details about overcrowding at the McAllen Station, citing operational security concerns. Cabrera and Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, who toured the McAllen Station on Wednesday, independently confirmed the number to The Monitor.

Tight quarters also temporarily pack men, women and children together, Cabrera said, exposing non-violent immigrants to potential predators. Agents routinely find criminals among them:

    >> Agents apprehended Juan Alberto Quintero-Villanueva of Honduras near Rio Grande City on Saturday, according to the federal criminal complaint filed against him. A background check revealed Quintero-Villanueva was convicted of carnal knowledge of a child in March 2013 and deported.

    >> Agents apprehended Wilfredo Trejo-Castillo of Honduras near Hidalgo on Sunday, according to the federal criminal complaint filed against him. A background check revealed Trejo-Castillo was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in September 2011 and deported.

    >> Agents apprehended Edgar Francisco Ruiz-Hernandez of Mexico near Hidalgo on Monday, according to the federal criminal complaint filed against him. A background check revealed Ruiz-Hernandez was convicted of robbery in August 2011 and deported.

“If a fight breaks out in there or if an agent gets attacked in there, it has the potential to get really ugly really quick,” Cabrera said.

Overcrowding also leaves agents unable to properly quarantine immigrants infected with communicable diseases, Cabrera said, adding that the McAllen Station recently detained people infected with scabies.

“They’re being quarantined by a piece of yellow tape. Basically, if you’re on this side of the yellow tape you don’t have scabies and if you’re on that side you do,” Cabrera said. “And don’t cross that line.”

Caused by tiny mites that borrow into a person’s skin, scabies usually starts with an itchy rash, according to the World Health Organization’s website. It usually takes four to six weeks for symptoms to develop.

“Right now we know that there’s scabies in the building, but who know what else is in there,” Cabrera said. “There are people from all over the world in there.”

Well, now that it is public info, look for Obama to just turn them loose. Very large increase in numbers of border violators from last year, just does not look good for the home team. I cannot understand why gov't will not man up the border to just stop them and turn them back around. If less than one percent was successfully crossing it would pretty well end it, for a cost of a few billion, rather than a few billion over and over and over doing it this way. Make a good investment once, rather than investing badly over and over and over.

It seems to be planned, planned to wear down Americans to allow voters to say, "Well. border security is not working, open it up?" I hope not!

Scabies-Infected Illegal Immigrants Pass Infestation to US Law Enforcement

Scabies-Infected Illegal Immigrants Pass Infestation to US Law Enforcement

Several U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) sector have reportedly contracted scabies from contact with detained illegal immigrants.

According to a report by Action 4 News, about 10-15 percent of apprehended illegal immigrants have scabies in the RVG area. "A lot of people [are] coming in with the disease, and it seems to be spreading, not just within the McAllen station, but throughout the Valley and to some of our agents," Chris Cabrera, a spokesman for the National Border Patrol Council, told the local media outlet.

Zack Taylor, Chairman of the National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers, told Breitbart Texas that illegal immigrants are often not screened for diseases during processing.

He said, "Even Border Patrol does not screen people for such diseases due to the sheer numbers of people who need to be processed. Immigrants aren't even screened if they're going into a public jail or an immigration detention facility."

Sharp increases in illegal immigration into the U.S. this year has caused processing facilities to become overcrowded--authorities simply do not have time to screen every apprehended illegal immigrant for diseases.
RGV Border Patrol spokesman Daniel Tirado told Breitbart Texas that his sector is overwhelmed with the number of illegal immigrants that currently need to be processed. "We're catching an average of 1,000 per day and our agents are processing them around the clock. Processing takes between one to two hours per individual--it varies case by case," he said.

According to the Associated Press, the RGV sector has arrested more than 130,000 people for immigration violations since October 1--this marks a 67 percent increase from last year.

Overcrowding has made it difficult to identify and quarantine infected detainees. Many are concerned that scabies and other illnesses may be passed onto the general public.

Hidalgo County Health Department director Eddie Olivarez told Action 4 News that many illegal immigrants are likely contracting scabies in human stash houses, as they make their journey into the U.S. "The situation is that probably in the stash houses on the Mexican side or even on the U.S. side those stash houses are probably infected with this particular illness," he said.

Texas-based human stash houses, sometimes containing hundreds of illegal immigrants, could pose disease-related threats to surrounding U.S. citizens. Sometimes, such houses are located near children. Early in May, Breitbart Texas reported on a large human stash house busted across from a Texas day care.

While the RGV Border Patrol sector has not confirmed the exact number of detainees or agents with scabies, an investigation is reportedly being launched into the matter.

Texas Congressman Ruben Hinojosa reportedly released a statement that said, "I have made a formal request to the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the reports of overcrowding and disease among the detainees at the McAllen Border Patrol facility."

Border Patrol: We Don't Screen for Diseases

by Kristin Tate 29 May 2014, 6:34 AM PDT
    breitbart

HOUSTON, Texas--It was recently revealed that illegal immigrants with scabies who were apprehended in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) area passed on the infestation to several U.S. Border Patrol agents. In the face of this news, Breitbart Texas has learned that the thousands of illegal immigrants detained on the Texas-Mexico border each day are not screened for diseases or infections.

"We don't screen for diseases," RGV Border Patrol spokesman Omar Zamora told Breitbart Texas. "All we are is a processing center, so we don't do that."

He added that illegal immigrants are only brought to hospitals for treatment when they raise a concern to the attention of Border Patrol agents. This is the case regardless of what the illegal alien may have--whether it be an infection like scabies or something more serious like cancer.

Sharp increases in illegal immigration into the U.S. this year has caused processing facilities to become overcrowded. Authorities do not have time or resources to screen every apprehended illegal immigrant for diseases.

The RGV sector alone catches about 1,000 illegal immigrants per day. Processing usually takes between one to two hours per individual. However, since facilities have become backed-up, overcrowded, and strained on resources, an illegal immigrant may have to wait several months before being processed.

Overcrowding in processing facilities has made it difficult to identify and quarantine infected detainees. Many are concerned that scabies and other illnesses may be passed onto the general public.

Zamora said that illegal immigrants are likely contracting scabies in human stash houses before being apprehended by Border Patrol agents. "Scabies spreads with close skin contact," he said. "Typically [the immigrants] get to stash houses in Mexico until they decide it's time to cross into the U.S. Then, if they do make it here, they're put in another stash house where there could be hundreds of individuals in a small space. This are all situations of close contact. They can get [scabies] anywhere along their travels so its hard to figure out where, exactly, it's being spread."

Border Patrol agents are left with few ways to protect themselves against potential diseases once detainees are brought to processing facilities.

Zamora mentioned that agents are allowed use rubber gloves, long sleeves, and a mask for protection when dealing with captured illegal immigrants.

He added, "As Border Patrol is looking at revamping and making things more efficient, they've talked about putting a medical footprint in some of these sectors. Like putting a nurse or physician's assistant there so they can pre-screen for minor issues so you don't need to take [detainees] to the E.R. for scabies or head lice. It would be more efficient and at the same time, the immigrant would get care."

Although the RGV Border Patrol sector has not yet released the exact number of detainees or agents with scabies, an investigation is reportedly being launched into the matter.

Texas Congressman Ruben Hinojosa released a statement that said, "I have made a formal request to the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the reports of overcrowding and disease among the detainees at the McAllen Border Patrol facility."
