State Voter I.D. Bill Approved By Senate

Last Update: 7:08 am

AUSTIN - Lawmakers are debating whether you should have to show a photo ID to vote.

Lawmakers debated a proposed bill yesterday. Most of the time was spent trying to agree on the standards.

Democrats had trouble clarifying the number of days a voter would have to prove their identity if any questions arise. Representative Armando Martinez, a Democrat from Weslaco, says the wording is misleading.

"Completely misleading because people can take that as either calendar days or business days, have the confusion and not be able to vote, and that's the last thing we want. We don't want Texans to have any type of suppression on their vote.", said Representative Martinez.

Republicans say the bill would stop voter fraud. Democrats say the bill is targeting the poor and minority voters who they say are less likely to have a state issued ID.

The bill has passed the senate. It now goes back to the committee. The bill could be back on the house floor by Wednesday.
