    U.S. Border Patrol Weekly Blotter: April 16 - April 22

    (04/22/2009)Border Patrol agents seized over 13,337 pounds of marijuana valued at $11,590,870 and 6 pounds of heroin valued at $480,000. Agents arrested 6 criminal aliens and 7 gang members. There were 18 rocking incidents.

    *This overview is compiled from incidents reported to Office of Border Patrol and is not intended to reflect all Border Patrol enforcement actions. Most arrests and seizures fail to meet the requirements for mandatory reporting to Border Patrol Headquarters.


    Reported on April 16, 2009


    Blaine Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico and seized 149 pounds of marijuana valued at $745,750 near Sumas, Washington. Agents received information on activity in the area, and discovered three duffle bags hidden in the brush. The subject was arrested after he attempted to abscond to Canada.


    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 557 pounds of marijuana valued at $445,760, a 1993 Mazda sedan, and arrested a United States Citizen (USC) near Pharr, Texas. The subject failed to yield to agents, but was later stopped and apprehended.


    Yuma Sector – Border Patrol agents seized a 2008 Hyundai and arrested a USC at the traffic checkpoint near Dateland, Arizona. The subject presented himself for inspection at the traffic checkpoint, and a Border Patrol canine alerted to the vehicle. The subject refused to comply with agents’ commands and he became verbally abusive. He was subsequently removed from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed 50 rounds of .45 caliber ammunition and a loaded magazine.

    Laredo Sector – An off-duty Border Patrol agent assisted local law enforcement officials in arresting two unidentified individuals near San Antonio, Texas. The agent was at his residence when he observed two individuals breaking into the residence of his next door neighbor. The agent contacted the police, and the two individuals subsequently jumped into his back yard. The agent detained the individuals until the police arrived.


    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 2,258 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,806,400, a 1998 Freightliner tractor-trailer, and arrested a USC at the traffic checkpoint near Kingsville, Texas. The subject arrived at the checkpoint and consented to a non-intrusive exam of his vehicle, revealing 98 bundles of marijuana concealed in several boxes in the trailer.

    El Centro Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near Palm Desert, California. Records checks revealed the subject had been previously convicted of various sex crimes including child molestation and sodomy and was sentenced to six years in prison.


    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,634 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,307,200, recovered a stolen 1996 Plymouth Voyager and 2001 Chevrolet Impala, and arrested three illegal aliens from Mexico near Abram, Texas. Agents observed two vehicles approach the Rio Grande River and subsequently leave the area. Agents conducted vehicle stops and discovered marijuana inside both vehicles.


    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,542 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,233,960, a 1992 Chevrolet Astro van, and arrested a USC juvenile near Progreso, Texas. Agents attempted to make contact with the driver of a vehicle observed leaving the River Grande River. The driver then turned around and drove back to the river and attempted to abscond. Agents located the driver and discovered the marijuana inside the vehicle.

    El Centro Sector – Border Patrol agents rescued a USC juvenile after receiving information from local law enforcement that the child was missing from a campsite in Seely, California. Border Patrol agents and agents from Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine deployed to the area and subsequently located the individual after he had crashed his motorcycle. There were no injuries reported and agents made contact with the juvenile's family.


    Laredo Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested three USCs, 35 illegal aliens, recovered a Penske rental truck, and seized a tractor-trailer during a 10-minute span at the Interstate Highway 35 traffic checkpoint in Laredo, Texas. Two USCs arrived at the checkpoint in the Penske truck and one USC arrived in the tractor-trailer. A Border Patrol canine alerted to both vehicles. A search revealed two illegal aliens in the back of the Penske truck and 33 illegal aliens in the tractor-trailer.


    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near Brownsville, Texas. Records checks revealed the subject had an extensive criminal history and multiple active warrants issued in the State of Texas for aggravated sexual assault of a child.


    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 4,547 pounds of marijuana valued at $3,637,600, a 2005 Freightliner tractor-trailer, and arrested a USC at the traffic checkpoint near Falfurrias, Texas. The subject presented himself and the tractor-trailer for inspection and a Border Patrol canine alerted to the trailer. A search revealed 203 bundles of marijuana concealed in a false compartment.


    Yuma Sector – Border Patrol agents detained two USCs at a traffic checkpoint after receiving information that the two subjects may have been involved in an armed robbery near Quartzsite, Arizona. The subjects presented themselves for inspection and a Border Patrol canine alerted to their vehicle. A search revealed methamphetamines, drug paraphernalia, ski masks, and a loaded 9 mm Hi-Point pistol.

    Del Rio Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested a USC for alien smuggling near La Pryor, Texas. During processing, the subject admitted to being a Latin Kings gang member.


    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 6 pounds of heroin valued at $480,000 at the traffic checkpoint in Sarita, Texas. A passenger bus from Mexico was presented for inspection, and a Border Patrol canine alerted to the luggage compartment. A search revealed the heroin inside a false compartment in a suitcase. Attempts to determine the owner were negative, and the bus was released.


    Swanton Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 92 pounds of hydroponic marijuana valued at $368,000, a 2009 Mercury Sable, and arrested a national of Canada at the traffic checkpoint near Hartford, Vermont. An agent performed a consent search of the vehicle's trunk after noting the subject was exhibiting nervous and suspicious behavior. The inspection of the trunk revealed 92 bundles of marijuana concealed inside duffle bags.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 2,557 pounds of marijuana valued at $2,046,200 and a 2000 Ford Excursion near Nogales, Arizona. The vehicle was found abandoned north of the international border.


    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents rescued 15 illegal aliens after the subjects called 911 and requested assistance near Tucson, Arizona. With the assistance of Customs and Border Protection air assets, the aliens were subsequently located. One alien was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
