U.S. Border Patrol agents seized $10.5 Million Drugs

    The Monitor
    September 15, 2007 - 11:14PM
Each Sunday The Monitor runs a sampling of crimes from police reports over the previous week in Hidalgo and Starr counties.

La Joya: U.S. Border Patrol agents seized more than 7,000 pounds of cocaine valued at more than $5 million on Sept. 8 after noticing several individuals along the Rio Grande.

When agents approached, the subjects threw down several packages and fled into Mexico, according to a news release.

Agents searched the area and found the cocaine, separated into 10 bundles. No arrests have been made.

Peñitas: The U.S. Border Patrol seized $5.5 million worth of cocaine Tuesday after a pursuit south of the city.

Agents pursuing two cars along the Rio Grande seized the narcotics after one of the vehicles plunged into the water, according to a news release. The driver and passenger swam back to Mexico.

The second car continued north and was eventually abandoned on a nearby road.

In all, agents discovered 70 bricks of cocaine, weighing more than 170 pounds. No arrests were made.

San Juan: An 18-year-old man was arraigned Tuesday on charges stemming from a shooting that took place Sept. 8.

Police arrested Freddy Lerma, of Alamo, in connection with the shooting, which injured one person, said San Juan police investigator Rolando Garcia.

Lerma is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and engaging in organized criminal activity. He remains in Hidalgo County jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

According to police, two vehicles arrived at the 1100 block of Monica Lane about midnight Sept. 8 and several people got out of the cars. The group started to argue and one person fired a rifle three times into the air.

The gunman then pointed the rifle at the crowd and continued to shoot several more rounds.

One man was struck in the leg. He was taken to the hospital and released Sunday, Garcia said.

McAllen: A man who was recently released from a Texas prison raped and threatened to kill his former girlfriend during a fit of jealousy Sept. 9, police said.

The woman accused Edelmiro DeLeon, 35, of McAllen, of taking her to his apartment, wrapping a leather belt around her neck and sexually assaulting her several times after finding the phone number of another man in her cell phone.

DeLeon was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated sexual assault. He remains in the Hidalgo County jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

It is The Monitor’s policy not to identify victims of sexual assault.

According to probable cause affidavit in the case, the attack occurred Sunday afternoon at DeLeon’s home on the 2800 block of West Ebony Street.

If convicted, DeLeon could face up to life imprisonment and a $10,000 fine.

McAllen: Authorities are searching for a 20-year-old man believed to have stolen a 2001 white Chevrolet Suburban.

McAllen Municipal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Eduardo Longoria Zuniga in connection with the Sept. 2 theft of the vehicle from the 4600 block of West Maple Avenue.

Police described Longoria as 5 feet 5 inches and 120 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Investigators believe the stolen vehicle is in Mexico.

Alamo: The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a home invasion on Puma Road.

Two men who lived in the home were injured after four men broke in about 2 a.m. Friday, authorities said.

The intruders wielded rifles and were dressed in black and spoke only Spanish. Five family members were home during the robbery.

The robbers struck one man in the head and shot another. Neither victim was seriously injured.

The suspects took only a small amount of cash, police said. Investigators believe the suspects escaped in a beige Ford Focus.

THIS WAY BIG BUCKS WILL BE SAVED AND MADE.

WE CAN SAVE THE DRUG ENFORCEMENT MONEY AND MAKE MONEY FROM THE SALES AND TAX.

BUT I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT WITH SOME OF THAT MONEY WE SHOULD OPEN SOME REALLY GOOD DRUG TREATMENT CENTERS FOR THOSE WHO FALL TO ADDICTION.

ADDICTION IS NOT CURED BY MAKING DRUGS ILLEGAL AND THROWING PEOPLE IN JAIL. OH AND WE CAN SAVE MONEY FROM NOT INCARCERATING ILL PEOPLE TOO.
