Jail releases wrong inmate
Facility adds more safeguards and training to prevent incidents

The Midland County jail released the wrong man from jail after he forged another inmate’s name on release papers, according to a news release from Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter.

Deputies are now looking for Daniel Vargas, 37, who is wanted on a felony escape charge. He was being held on a violation of parole for a possession of cocaine charge. According to the release, Daniel Vargas also had an immigration hold.

According to the release, detention officers were ordered by a supervisor to escort an inmate by the last name of Vargas to the releasing area at 12:30 a.m. Saturday. They called Vargas’ name and Daniel Vargas responded. However, Daniel Vargas was not the Vargas that they were looking for.

The release said Vargas forged the other Vargas’ name on the paperwork and was released from the jail.

The release said the Vargas they intended to release, whose first name was not given, was released from the jail later that morning.
