Axelrod: GOP, Dems Working on Immigration Bill

Axelrod: GOP, Dems Working on Immigration Bill

    Sunday, November 15, 2009 1:02 PM

Democrats and Republicans in Congress are working together to craft an immigration reform bill that could become law as early as next year, a senior White House adviser said on Sunday.

That legislation could create a path to citizenship for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants already in the United States, David Axelrod, senior advisory to President Barak Obama, told CNN's "State of the Union" with John King.

"I think some good work is being done on both sides of the aisle to achieve that," Axelrod said, referring to the partisan divide on Capitol Hill.

"We have to have better security at our borders and we are developing that," he said, alluding to a key concern of conservative critics who scuttled an attempt at immigration reform under former President George W. Bush.

The most contentious question surrounding past and future attempts at immigration reform is whether to, and how to, ease rules governing the route to citizenship for people who have entered the country illegally.

"We have to hold accountable and responsible the 12 million people who are here illegally," Axelrod said. "And they have to pay a fine and a penalty, and have to meet certain requirements in order to get in line to earn citizenship," he told CNN.

Yes and the laws call for their leaving the US for ten years.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

No surprise here. In 2007 there were GOP Senators such as Jon Kyl who did this.

For now, we know it's Lindsey Graham who Schumer has already mentioned. Perhaps John Cornyn too, and we'll see if McCain sticks his neck out (he would if he gets his "guest workers"). The key is if we can hold most of the GOP, and some moderate, sensible Dems in the Senate and House.

12 million, 20 million, plus anchor babies, and the Democrats have their voters to keep us broke forever, by following the free handouts, many of which are denied to citizens. The unemployment rate for Americans would be much different if illegal aliens did not have jobs, including part time. Citizens could be working to make ends meet for themselves and their families if illegal labor was not available.

Republicans are just plain dumb to not face the fact that illegal aliens will not vote for them, lest they vote as Democrats. Progressive Republicans, such as Senators McCain and Graham, are sellouts to the likes of La Raza, and Americans should vote them out. It it time for citizens to smarten up and realize what these fence sitters are doing to our nation - both Democrats and Republicans.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

The bill will likely be even worse than the various versions of the 2007 amnesty legislation (S. 1348 and 1639) which at least as weak and bogus as they were, proposed to chip away at family reunification and had in part a "points based" merit system.

Napolitano's speech the other day was designed at least in part to provide cover for waivering senators and pols; to give them cover and talking points, (false) assurances that the govt has "secured the border etc." Make sure we remind them that we are not deceived by this.

Yes. You need to deport them. Paying a fine, a penalty, and learning English is not acceptable. They need to be deported and stand in line with all the other people who wish to immigrate to America. It is so demeaning to people who come here legally.

Hey Axelrod! How about it if Obama and his Congress don't change the "status quo" on illegal immigration laws, the same argument you jerks are using to remove the abortion amendment to the health care bill?

How about keeping our existing immigration laws and ENFORCING THEM!

What a two-faced slur you are.

Face it the Dems just want cheap votes, they could care less about American workers, taxpayers, legal immigrants, the rule of law, or fairness.

    I totally agree!

If you legalize 12-15 million people the huge majority will be Democrats and our two party system will cease to matter. End of our country as we know it.
