A yearlong investigation into the death of a Honduran immigrant led a grand jury Monday to indict a 38-year-old Manassas-area man for her murder.

Wednesday morning Prince William County police arrested Alexis C. Yanez, who originally told investigators that he found Rosa Garcia dead from suicide last August, said Commonwealth Attorney Paul Ebert.

"He allegedly came home from work and found her body hanging from a doorknob," Ebert said.

But a medical examiner report said she died from strangulation and assault, not injuries from a hanging.

Garcia, 23, emigrated from Honduras three weeks before her death and lived with Yanez, Ebert said.

Police arrested Yanez at his home at 7975 Deward Court in the West Gate area outside Manassas, said Officer John Bogert, Prince William police spokesman.

A suicide note found on the scene last year was inconsistent with other items written by her, police said at the time.

Since then, police gathered evidence to support the murder charge, Ebert said.

Yanez is being held in the Prince William-Manassas regional jail without bond. His court hearing date has not been set.
