HOUSTON, Pa. -- A southwestern Pennsylvania man is jailed on charges he doused his wife with gasoline in hopes of setting her on fire.

Chartiers Township police said Marco Corona-Mesa, 21, attacked his wife Saturday morning. Police said the woman told them he grabbed her neck, ripped her clothing, smashed a TV and stereo before holding her on a bed and pouring gasoline on her.

Police said the suspect didn't have a lighter, so he went downstairs and lit some toilet paper on an electric stove, but the fire went out before he could return to set his wife on fire.

Federal immigration officials have been contacted because Corona-Mesa is a Mexican national. He faces a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
