U.S.-S. Korea free trade deal biggest since NAFTA

SEOUL, South Korea - The United States reached its biggest free trade agreement since NAFTA on Monday, clinching a last-minute deal with close security ally South Korea that it hopes will bolster bilateral ties and provide added spark to the Doha Round of global trade talks.

"The free trade agreement we are announcing today is a historic accomplishment," Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Karan Bhatia told reporters after eight days of talks. "It is an agreement for the 21st century."

The deal, which requires approval by lawmakers in both countries, is the biggest for Washington since the North American Free Trade Agreement signed in 1993 and is expected to lead to more than 90 percent of U.S. exports to South Korea being duty free within three years.

It is the biggest trade deal ever for South Korea, which in nearly 50 years has grown from one of the world's poorest countries to become its 10th-largest economy.

The US has reached agreement with South Korea on its largest trade deal since the 1992 North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta).

Estimates suggest that an additional $20 billion (£10.14 billion) of goods will pass between the two countries as a result of the deal, adding to the existing $70 billion (£35.48 billion) currently traded.

The deal comes at the end of a ten-month negotiation period in which both the vehicle and agriculture sectors proved points of contention.

Talks continued up to a deadline imposed on the White House which allowed it to lay trade agreement proposals to Congress without the legislative branch being able to place amendments on the deal.

In a letter to Congress, US president George Bush said: "The US-South Korea free trade agreement will generate export opportunities for US farmers, ranchers, manufacturers and service suppliers, promote economic growth and the creation of better paying jobs in the US and help US consumers save money while offering them greater choices."

Congress will now vote to accept or reject the trade agreement.

Truth is at least by my research is that these blocks are here to control people. But all these blocks will be merged through these trade agreements. Which when done will allow for a global government to over see it all.

Anything G Bush is involved in is never good for this country, he is out to destroy this nation, I don't know if it is on purpose or if he is just plain stupid.

How many times have we heard this song and dance about USA products being duty-free...in just a few short years. There goes what American jobs were left to us. Being sucked to Korea now. 90% of US exports? Do we actually still EXPORT anything except our former, good-paying jobs???!!!
