ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Georgia could vote this week on whether to oppose a policy that requires the school to turn away illegal immigrants who apply for admission.

The University Council will vote Thursday on whether to ask the state Board of Regents to reverse its policy requiring UGA and several other universities to turn away the students.

The council is weighing a petition signed by 80 UGA faculty members who say the ban "represents a step in the direction of resegregation of public education in our state."

At least three other UGA groups have passed resolutions opposing the policy, which was adopted after some state lawmakers threatened legislation that would prohibit admitting students who are not U.S. citizens or who have student visas.
