UMC deserves feds' help
July 9, 2005

University Medical Center is doubling the size of its emergency room - and it wants a helping hand from the federal government. It's a request that makes sense.

UMC is the only top-level trauma center in southern Arizona. And it has the added burdens of handling patients from Mexico and large numbers of uninsured patients.

UMC is seeking $2 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which has a fund for construction and renovation of health-care facilities. Total cost of the UMC project is $13 million.

Because of its cross-border responsibilities, UMC deserves the federal assistance.
