Unauthorized immigrant population grew fastest in Texas

The greatest increase in the unauthorized immigrant population between 2000 and 2006 occurred in Texas, according to a report released today by the U.S. Department of Homeland security.

California still leads the nation with 2.8 million unauthorized residents. Texas was next with 1.6 million, followed by Florida with nearly a million. California and Texas account for 39 percent of all immigrants living illegally in the United States.

But the population grew the most in Texas -- an average annual increase of 92,000 in each year of the five year period. The unauthorized population of California grew an average annual increase of 53,000 during that period, followed by Georgia at 45,000.

The greatest percentage increase was in Georgia: 123 percent. Texas was fourth with 50 percent growth, the report said.

All told, there were 11.6 million illegal immigrants living in the United States in 2006, up from 8.5 million in 2000.

Of the total, 57 percent of the unauthorized residents are from Mexico.

But not all are from Central or South America.

About 1.6 million unauthorized immigrants are from the Philippines, India, Korea, China and Vietnam, the report said.

The report defines unauthorized immigrants as foreign-born non-citizens who enter the country without legal authorization or who enter the county temporarily and stay beyond the date they are required to leave.

They know Texas is Bush’s home state, and that he will be home to protect them after he leaves the White House

    "unauthorized residents?"

Wonder who coined that term? What will they think of next to call these "ILLEGAL ALIENS?"

I prefer ILLEGAL ALIENS myself. "Unauthorized residents" doesn't sound as "sweet" as "undocumented immigrants". But "residents" they are NOT! So arrest them and DEPORT them!

Unauthorized immigrants go to other states
U.S. government report shows number of unauthorized immigrants is growing in California, but at slower rate than in other states.

California's unauthorized immigrant population has grown at a slower rate than those of a number of other states around the country in recent years, a government report showed today.

Across the United States, the number of unauthorized immigrants rose 37 percent, to 11.6 million, in the six years from 2000 to 2006, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

In California, the unauthorized population grew just 13 percent during this period – compared with 50 percent in Texas, 52 percent in Arizona and 123 percent in Georgia, the report showed.

"Growing geographic dispersion of the unauthorized immigrant population is reflected by an increase in the share of the population living in all other states," the report said.

California still hosts more unauthorized immigrants than any other state – 25 percent of the country's total. That's a smaller share than in 2000, when California was home to 30 percent of the country's unauthorized immigrants.

Homeland Security defines unauthorized immigrants as foreign-born citizens who entered the country illegally or overstayed a visa. In this report, however, the group may include immigrants who have temporary legal status.
