Commentary: It's time to face the reality of keeping it real

Commentary: It's time to face the reality of keeping it real

This is one of those reality's believe it or not. Everybody, if you've lived long enough will come face to face with a house guest who's over-stayed their welcome, usefulness and purpose.

Extended stays can become nerve racking, painful and costly. When patience has been tried, abused and ignored, it's time to face the reality of keeping it real.

Franciso Martinez fit the profile of those who come, failed and settled on becoming a burden.

Martinez came into the country illegally, became gainfully employed, married a U.S. Citizen and considered, 'hey, it don't get any better than this.'

Then one day in Bacliff, Texas, he had the unthinkable happen. While working, he had an on the day injury, rushed to UTMB as an emergency and now that the emergency is passed, Martinez is faced with a huge problem. He's paralyzed from the chest down, unemployed, uninsured and out of luck.

The bait shop where he worked has for the most part realized, Martinez has outlived his usefulness and purpose and therefore is no longer a welcome guest worker. It's a damn shame, but hey, it's the reality around the Texas that Governor Rick Perry so fondly promotes as a job creating state.

In this economy, UTMB and other hospitals around the country has to decide cost effective measures that will keep them fulfilling obligations to the general public, who are those that can afford to pay, either through insurance or qualified state and federal programs. Martinez fits none of those categories.

Illegal immigration, when you face the reality of the practice, has tested and abused patience, not only in Texas, but other parts of the country.

UTMB pass the blame on to those who deserve it, the state and federal government. They offer no excuses or explanations. The reality of keeping it real is simple. Federal governments, elected officials, pro-immigration advocates and businesses are the responsible parties here.

Illegal immigration is not going to go away until all of the above act, and not just in the interest of the immigrant, but also in the interest of the costs, burdens and detriments to health, safety and well being.

If there is at least one difference between governments, elected officials, pro-immigration advocates and gangs who profit from human smuggling, than by all means, name it. It's time to face the reality of keeping it real.

Actually, he didn't marry her, according to another story here in the forums, they are "common law." Personally I don't think an illegal alien should be able to take advantage of common law marriage. Anyone here know if they actually can or if this is just a BS claim grabbing for sympathy?
I don't care who you are, how you got here, what color you are, what language/dialect you speak... If you didn't get here legally then you don't belong here. Period.
